I have been selected to sit on the committee for the Energy Security Bill which is all about the security and sustainability of UK energy. The Government are determined to do everything possible to mitigate against the supply shocks and price rise we have experienced when Putin launched his illegal invasion of Ukraine. The committee will consider all the key elements of the bill and examine each clause in detail to ensure that this Bill delivers the significant energy legislation for a generation.
Clean and affordable energy for the long term depends on the transformation of our energy system. The government recently published ‘Powering Up Britain’, which brings together our Energy Security Plan and Net Zero Growth Plan to ensure the system is fit for the future, achieve net zero by 2050 and boost economic growth. We’re setting out a pathway to greater energy independence through the deployment of low carbon technologies – protecting households in Blyth Valley and elsewhere against price shocks and bringing down prices in the long term.
The Bill will leverage private investment in green technologies like carbon capture and offshore wind – great news for jobs in Blyth Valley as a leading green energy hub.
A Public Bill Committee is a committee set up by the House of Commons to examine the details of a particular Bill and their composition must match the size of the parties in the House – genuine cross party working. We will be able to take written and oral evidence from leading experts in these matters.
Thanks to the dozens of businesses and community organisations who came to my Meet the Team event last Friday at the Cramlington Hub. It was great to meet so many people and here about the exciting things happening in their organisations and about some of the challenges they face. My team and I will do everything we can to help deal with some of these challenges. Obviously, I can’t go into detail, but we were asked to make representations to Government on legislative changes, take up cases with the Council on specific issues, raise casework with Whitehall departments and promote awareness of organisations. We also heard some great ideas from people on making Blyth Valley and even better place to live and work. Thanks to everybody who gave up their time to come along.
