The Government has announced a new package of measures to protect up to 1.5m people in England who are at the highest risk from coronavirus. This will enable them to shield themselves and stay at home. People identified will be contacted this week and soon receive detailed advice on behalf of their GP practice or specialist on how best to protect themselves. A helpline will be introduced so people know exactly how to care for themselves and others in the coming weeks and months.
Ian Levy said, "What the Government is doing is following the scientific advice to ensure that everything is being done to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. This will protect the most vulnerable in society and every single one of us has a crucial role to play by pulling together and supporting each other. The key message is to follow the advice being provided by the scientific and health experts."
A Local Support System will also be put in place to ensure those individuals self-isolating at home and who are without a support network of friends and family will receive basic groceries and medicine. These measures are a vital part of the Government's plan to protect ourselves, our family and our friends from being impacted by the virus. For those most at risk there is a need to go further and that is why the Government is urging that the 1.5m people contacted should stay at home for at least 12 weeks.
